After all that I forgot to raise the point that I originally intended. I think the built in WSPR decoder is adequate for casual users. It's a bit like the FSK and Fax decoders. They are perfectly OK for a quick 'look see' but serious users would pr…

Hi All, I think that maybe we are all loosing sight of what the KiWi was originally designed to do and what it is now capable of. A while ago John posted a link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_good_deed_goes_unpunished Which I think nicely sums …

Hi Rob, I think I'm using an older version of the switching extension. I hadn't realised that Kari had issued some very recent updates, so that may well be the problem. Regards, Martin - G8JNJ

Hi Dave, I think part of the problem is that the KiWi tunes to the center of the signal when you click on the waterfall rather than to the carrier frequency in the case of USB or LSB. Hence the bandwidth is relative to that center frequency. There…

Hi Rob, Maybe a couple of silly questions. Have you setup the options on the Antenna switch extension page in the admin menu ? e.g. Deny antenna switching? set to NO Have you changed the antenna names from undefined or blank to an actual antenna…

@Christoph OK will do. Can you remind me of the kiwirecorder.py syntax for the recording command string. It's a while since I last used it. I'm out today but I've left a KiWi in 8ch mode with the PPS marker running. GPS 1PPS is fed via 20m of co…

@Lonecrow "Presets - I really like to flip around known channels / favorites but it is a manual process. I know you can do last/previous with the arrow keys but I'd like some form of bookmark/favorites extension. A simple list on the left han…

@ Powernumpty Thanks for that - I was sure I tried that string initially and it didn't work for me. But this time it did :-) I think I must have accidentally included a space character somewhere. Regards, Martin - G8JNJ

John, Can I use a "no_wf" URL parameter without any other parameters to bring up a non-waterfall RX channel ? I've tried various syntaxes, but so far I have not been able to find one that works. Regards, Martin - G8JNJ

Hi Jim, "I wonder if the active stage in the whip is getting pickled?" I don't think so, from memory the two BC stations were peaking about -20dB on the waterfall, so I'd have thought that a pair of 10dB notches would have fixed it. Unf…

@Lonecrow Sorry to say that your recording doesn't sound like WSPR. It normally sounds like a CW carrier with a very slight 'warble' with each transmission lasting for just under 2 minutes. I don't think anyone heard them on 80m last night, but t…

@Powernumpty Yes most of the Mini-Whips 'run out of steam' on frequencies above about 10MHz as the input capacitance of the FET starts to present significant loading at the amplifier input. They seem particularly popular on the German KiWi's, but…

@Powernumpty OK I'll take a look. Regards, Martin - G8JNJ

@Powernumpty Using CAT5 should be fine, the big problem with Screened CAT5 is what to do with the screen connections at each end of the cable run. Sometimes this can just make things worse. Balanced twisted pair depends upon the two ends being c…

Hi John, Ah my fault. I hadn't realised that selecting one of the coloured tabs on the config page actually selected the method, I thought they were just tabs to access the config entry boxes. I'd accidentally left the reverse proxy tab set the las…

@Lonecrow Two things make a difference to the Mini-Whip signal level. The height above 'ground' and the length of the actual Whip element. PA3FWM has some good notes on the subject. http://www.pa3fwm.nl/technotes/tn07.html Regards, Martin - G8J…

@Lonecrow - thanks. I think once you have sorted out your ADC overload you may still have some problems with your Mini-Whip. It uses the coax as part of the antenna, so if you share the coax run with other cables, or the base of the Mini-whip is …

Think I've found the problem. It's associated with using a shared API key from sdr.hu sdr.hu registration status:ERROR (your IP does not match URL, != 50.116.2.70) I'll get another key issued for my other KiWi's Regards, Martin - G8JNJ

Yes, unfortunately you have two massive AM broadcast signals on 760KHz and 800KHz. As a temporary measure try attenuating the input signal by about 10dB. A longer term fix is to build a notch, or high pass filter to reduce the level of the BC stat…

But I am shown on http://rx.linkfanel.net/ (Image) Incidentally, I've now been missing from the TDoA map for about three days, so it's not a fleeting problem. Regards, Martin - G8JNJ

I'm now finding that when a user doesn't get a waterfall, they open more concurrent sessions hoping to find one :-( Regards, Martin - G8JNJ

Further update. I now have 6 users on my KiWi When I try to login as a user or as Admin, either locally or via the DDNS IP address, I now get the timeout message every time. I try the exemption password but it just takes me back to the timeout scr…

Update. It's not consistent, sometimes it asks for the password on a local connection when there is only one user. If I manage to quickly kick them off, then I can login as Admin and I don't get asked for the password (not set on local connection…

Hi Daniel, Well I said it was going to be controversial :-) "I think it's unfair to prioritize one specific application like that, regardless of how "superior" to others you find it to be." Maybe - but I'm providing the facili…

Hi John, How feasible would it be to 'multiplex' the channel(s) used to generate the waterfall ? My thinking is that maybe you could 'snapshot' a waterfall for each receiver channel and then periodically update the 'snapshot' per receiver like a g…

I think it will be OK to use USB as is the normal case. They will use DSB AM but it should resolve OK as USB, or AM, but not LSB as the tones will be 'mirrored' around the carrier frequency. Regards, Martin - G8JNJ
-
Hmmm, That sounds like an interesting idea. Anyone using AM on a single frequency for more than 1/2 hour would be a good starting point. Regards, Martin - G8JNJ

OK here's a controversial one for further discussion............. Looking at my KiWi activity, the users who stay on one frequency for the longest periods (sometimes several hours), tend to be either listening to AM broadcast stations or are AM pir…

Hi John, Would it be possible to provide an admin function to allow TDoA requests from other KiWi's to kick existing users from the Admins KiWi to allow the 30 second TDoA session to run. I'd normally kick the user that has been on the KiWi for th…

John, Are the KiWi's who have the timestamps switched off still shown on the TDoA map ? I've been trying to use Emerald several times today but although it has good GPS fixes I get the "no recent GPS timestamps" message when I try to sta…
