NFM broadcast on shortwave

edited April 23 in Signals Received

Since a few weeks I'm seeing NFM broadcast stations on shortwave, I think most, or all of them are pirates.

Is this a new thing or has this beeing going on for longer? The audio quality is surprisingly good for the bandwidth.

  • That's interesting.

I've always been surprised that NBFM hasn't been used on the lower frequencies. There is certainly a strong feeling that it is not appropriate on the Amateur bands, even though it was one of the modes originally used on 160m, back in the late 1940's, before SSB became so popular.

There is no reason why it shouldn't be used, as it offers some advantages over amplitude modulated modes in terms of rejecting AM noise, especially when used for semi-local communication, which is typical on 160m and 60m.
