WSPR extension (non-autorun) not uploading spots to wsprnet.org [fixed in v1.694]

Running v1.678 in 3 channel mode. I'm playing around with the (non-autorun) WSPR extension this evening, and it doesn't appear to be uploading spots to the WSPR database at http://www.wsprnet.org. I've had it going for the past 30 minutes with a good number of decodes shown on the extension. I tested the WSPR autorun, and it does upload spots with that.

  • While checking random Kiwis during the v1.679 update I tried the WSPR extension on one that had the reporter call/grid configured. No uploads to wsprnet.org

But then I tried the same reporter call/grid in a relatively nearby Kiwi I have admin access to and it worked! So I don't quite understand why there would be a difference. wsprnet.org having networking problems? But that doesn't explain why you got spots to upload in autorun mode.

As a test, I've been running the autorun on 20m and the extension on 30m at the same time for the past hour or so. Only the autorun on 20m is uploading spots to wsprnet.org.

  • I tried the WSPR extension on 30m with the Kiwi I have admin access to and it uploaded fine..

  • The WSPR net database used to have a lot of problems with upload capacity.

!0MHz is one of the more popular WSPR bands, and I wonder if this could be related to the time period after the 2 minute cycle, when the spots are uploaded.

I wonder if it would be any better if they were uploaded towards the end of the following 2 minute period, after the majority of spotting stations had uploaded, but before the next batch started.

    Regards,

    Martin

  • Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on.

As you may remember, the extension did work here: https://forum.kiwisdr.com/index.php?p=/discussion/3196/plenty-of-wspr-decodes-no-uploads-upload-spots-is-selected#latest

It's not too important. I don't monitor WSPR often, only every once in awhile just to see how the conditions are.

  • Bikedork (located in Minneapolis, MN, running v1.680 in 4 channel mode) also isn't reporting to the WSPR database using the extension.

  • Same problems here (KiwiSDR 2, v1.686). No Upload from the Extension. Only with Auto-Run.

  • Here's a 70+ post thread from the wsprdaemon forum describing how the wheels are falling off wsprnet.org (again) https://groups.io/g/wsprdaemon/topic/problem_uploading_spots/106716937?dir=asc

I'm going to give them some time to sort out their mess before I look at it.

  • Well I don't know. I just tried my test Kiwi in Europe and both the WSPR extension and autorun uploaded spots without any problems.

wsprnet.org is still only sending empty confirmation messages as opposed to earlier when they returned a count of successful uploads. This was very useful for debugging. Rob (wsprdaemon) and I have both mentioned this on the wsprnet forum. So maybe there will be a fix at some point.

  • The non-autorun extension still doesn't report here. Decodes, but doesn't report. Autorun works fine. Currently running v1.686.

I recall you changed something between having the extension report on the server side vs the client side as mentioned here: https://forum.kiwisdr.com/index.php?p=/discussion/3196/plenty-of-wspr-decodes-no-uploads-upload-spots-is-selected#latest Anything possibly have to do with those changes?

I made that change because logging of the upload count from wsprnet.org (assuming they ever fix it) only occurs if the spots are uploaded from the server side. So I felt is was better to make the extension behave as autorun does. And it's autorun that is working. So that change shouldn't be an issue.

If someone with failing WSPR extension uploads wants to email support@kiwisdr.com their admin password I can take a look. Maybe there is some other effect of the network environment I'm not seeing. Thanks.

  • I was just going to set an Admin password and send you a link, but decided to force an update to v1.688 first.

Guess what? Now the WSPR extension is reporting to wsprnet.org! I'll play around with it and see if it gives any trouble.

I let the non-autorun extension run for a good 20-30 minutes earlier today (on v1.686) and it wasn't reporting at that time, as it hasn't each time I tested it since I started this thread. I let the WSPR autorun go for a couple of days last week and that was reporting as normal.

So far it's working now (on v1.688). My reporter callsign is SWL/EN35.

  • Well that's pretty strange. As mentioned in the v1.688 thread the most recent changes (including v1.687) were very simple and should have only effected stuff completely unrelated to spot uploading.

The non-autorun extension is still reporting on mine. Autorun also still reports.

However, it still doesn't appear to be working on Bikedork (Minneapolis, MN, also running v1.688).

The only thing I did to mine was to update it from v1.686 to v1.688, nothing else.

What I'd like to do on one of these that is failing is to run a curl upload command manually and see if there is any additional error information that might give us a clue. So someone please send URL and admin password to support@kiwisdr.com. Thanks.

  • If nobody comes forward, let me know. I could attempt to "break" the WSPR extension again by reflashing the Kiwi with my most recent backup of v1.682.

  • My KiwiSDR2 has been down for a couple weeks now.....thanks to my remote Wifi switch losing connection I can't power cycle it. But I'll be at my 2nd QTH tomorrow evening so I can get it back going. If no one comes forward by this weekend, I can see if manual WSPR works on mine or not.... I'm still running an old version (1.67?)...

I'll report back here...if it's failing to report, I can offer mine up for that test.

  • So I updated mine to 1.690, and had the WSPR autorun going.... Uploading just fine. Stopped the autorun, started a WebRX session, and let the WSPR extension run for 10 minutes or so, just on 20M. Over 40 spots, and the log shows them decoding, but no upload. Restarted the autorun, and that again uploaded.

FWIW, using N8BTR as the upload callsign, and this was on 6/29. Gap is between 8:48 and 9:06 UTC.

  • Okay then Nate. If you're still game please set a temporary admin password and email it to support@kiwisdr.com and I'll poke around and see if I can get any more info about what's going on. Thank you.

  • Non-autorun WSPR is still reporting (uploading spots) fine here. I have it going on 20m at this moment.

Back when it didn't report (would still decode), it wouldn't report at all. It wasn't intermittent, it just simply didn't report a single decode. While the autorun reported fine. Didn't matter if I would alternate between the extension or the autorun, or if I ran the autorun at the same time as the extension. Only the autorun would report to wsprnet.org.

  • Emailed you the info.

  • Thanks Nate. I'm apparently not only stupid but blind as well. Bug took just a few minutes to find.

Will be fixed in this next big release I've been working on.
