  I would like to use one of the small generic WiFi devices that came with my Pi 2 B.  I'm not using it for anything else at the moment.  Are the commands already embedded in the Kiwi firmware, or is there some patching that has to be performed?

  The Kiwi software does not support USB WiFi dongles. The Beagle Debian software for these is poor/buggy and I don't want the support burden. Best to use an Ethernet-to-WiFi adapter. A couple of successful installations are reported here:

  Thanks, I'll stick with Ethernet for now.  I am running the radio on our local mesh net as an alternate receiver for our various EOCs in the region who are plagued with QRN.

  For the record, I finally got a TP-Link AC750, running in client mode, works fine.
