Issue with protection circuit [damaged in the post probably, sent a new one]

edited May 28 in Problems Now Fixed

Hello,

I just received today the protection circuit.

Before pluging it to the Kiwi I have a SNR of 26/20 and after I have 6/6.

I have been trying two differents adaptors but the result is the same.

What would be the problem ?

  • Could you do an experiment for me please? Zoom in on a local AM band station that has a strong, steady carrier. Use the "spectrum" button on the user control panel, or 's' key, to see the spectrum display. On the "WF" tab use the "Auto scale" button so you can see the carrier peak and make sure it remains steady over a short period of time (i.e. it's not fading).

Use CW mode and center the passband over the carrier frequency. Now the S-meter will read the strength of the carrier. Now try with and without the protection filter installed. What is the difference in carrier strength?

    Thank you

  • 59 +30 db without the protection and 53 with the protection

    The frequency is 162 KHz

Okay, so dead short essentially. I have another person who may be in the same situation unfortunately.

I didn't handle the design, manufacturing or shipping of these devices. If I find out they haven't been doing 100% factory test on these, like I have done for the Kiwi, then someone is going to have a big problem with me..

  • Tough luck to me... on the top of that it took 6 weeks to come home.

I am going to order another one then.

No, we'll ship you replacements for free.

  • Many thanks in advance.

Your first post said "two different adaptors" but your original order was for only one protection device. Did you mean you tried the one protection device on two different Kiwi?

This is important because we're trying to figure out if this is only a "one off" random failure or a bad batch. I am informed that the protectors and AM BCB filters are 100% tested with a network analyzer, which is what I was hoping for. The other possibility is damage by the mechanical postal sorting machinery since these are sent through the normal post (to save on shipping cost).

    Thank you

  • Hi,

the meaning of "two different adaptators" is the way to connect the PCB female SMA to the kiwi female SMA

  • I would bet on the postal process since the envelope was not in very good state

  • I received the replacement protection today, plugged in and the kiwi looks like happy ;o))

There is no noticeable attenuation with this one.

Thanks again for the way you managed this issue.
